Baden-Baden
Spa town on the northern edge of the Floresta Negra, used since Roman times. In the center are the Friedrichsbad baths, a 19th-century bathhouse, and the Caracalla Therme, with thermal pools. The Kurhaus houses the casino, the Lichtentaler Allee follows the Oos stream to the Lichtenthal monastery, the Museum Frieder Burda shows modern art and the Merkur funicular climbs to a viewpoint over the town.

Constança
Constança is the largest town on Lago de Constança, at the point where the Rhine leaves the lake, adjoining Suíça. It was the seat of bishops for more than a thousand years and hosted the Council from 1414 to 1418. Little damaged in the Second World War, the old town preserves the Konstanzer Münster, the Konzilgebäude on the harbour, the statue Imperia and the lanes of the Niederburg. Boats leave from here to the island of flowers Mainau, the island of monasteries Reichenau and the ferry to Meersburg.

Freiburg im Breisgau
University city in the southwest of the Black Forest, near France and Switzerland. The center revolves around the Freiburger Münster, a Gothic cathedral with an openwork tower, and the Münsterplatz, which has a market Monday through Saturday. Narrow water channels called Bächle run along the streets. The Martinstor and Schwabentor gates, the Augustinermuseum and the Schlossberg hill complete the town. Nearby are Lake Titisee, the Schauinsland cable car and the Triberg waterfalls.

Heidelberg
University city on the banks of the Neckar, about an hour by train from Frankfurt. The ruined castle (Heidelberger Schloss) dominates the hillside, and the Bergbahn funicular climbs to it and to the Königstuhl. Below lie the Altstadt, with the Hauptstraße and the Heiliggeistkirche, the Alte Brücke over the river, the Alte Universität with its museum and the Studentenkarzer, and on the other side of the Neckar the Philosophenweg, with the classic view of the town.

Meersburg
Meersburg lies on the northern shore of Lago de Constança, opposite Constança, and is divided into two parts: the Unterstadt, next to the water, and the Oberstadt, atop the cliff. Up there are Burg Meersburg, a medieval castle presented as the oldest still inhabited castle in Germany, and the Neues Schloss, a Baroque palace of the prince-bishops. Vineyards slope down to the lake, and near the town are the pile dwellings of Unteruhldingen and the Baroque church of Birnau.
