Cusco
Ancient capital of the Incas, Cusco sits at about 3,400 metres in an Andean valley. Colonial churches and manor houses were built on top of Inca stone walls, and the historic centre, a World Heritage site, is walked from the Plaza de Armas: Catedral, Qorikancha, San Blas, the Mercado de San Pedro and, above, Sacsayhuamán. It is the base for the Vale Sagrado, for Machu Picchu and for day trips into the mountains.

Aguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes, officially Machu Picchu Pueblo, is the village at the foot of Machu Picchu, at about 2,040 meters, in the bottom of the Urubamba River canyon, surrounded by forested mountains. There is no road to the village: it is reached by train or on foot. Buses to the sanctuary depart from there. It has hotels, restaurants, hot springs and the Manuel Chávez Ballón site museum.

Ollantaytambo
Ollantaytambo is an inhabited Inca village at the end of the Sacred Valley, about 2,790 metres above sea level and 72 km from Cusco. The houses follow the Inca layout, with water channels in the streets, and the fortress rises in terraces above the village. The train to Machu Picchu departs from the station, and nearby are the circular terraces of Moray and the Salineras de Maras.

Pisac
Pisac is the gateway to the Valle Sagrado, 33 km from Cusco, at about 2,970 meters, on the banks of the Urubamba River. The village has a plaza with a craft and local produce market, and high on the mountain sits one of the largest Inca archaeological sites in the valley, with terraces, temples and a cliffside cemetery. It’s a common stop on the road from Cusco to Urubamba and Ollantaytambo.
