About Loma San Jerónimo

Loma San Jerónimo is a small hill a few blocks from Asunción's historic center, occupied by a neighborhood of fewer than ten blocks, between Don Bosco and Oliva streets and Avenida República. According to tradition, the name comes from the Hieronymite friars of the early colonial period, and on the top of the hill there used to be a watch fort.

The neighborhood grew in the 19th century with the activity of Asunción's port, and in the early 20th century it had a bohemian life. The guarania singer Agustín Barboza was born there. The streets are narrow and cobbled, and the main stairway that leads to the viewpoint is one of the city's postcards.

The Oratorio San Jerónimo, built in 1926 together with the neighborhood school, is the center of devotion to the saint, with a patronal festival and procession. Loma also celebrates the feast of St. John with a bonfire and games, and Carnival. Painted facades and murals made with residents add color to the alleys.

From the viewpoint you can see downtown Asunción from above. In the neighborhood's bars and terraces, the evening starts early, with tereré, beer and Paraguayan food.
