About Costanera de Asunción
The Costanera is the avenue that runs along the Bay of Assunção, the bend of the Paraguay River in front of the historic centre. The first section, avenida José Asunción Flores, was opened in 2012, and later sections extended the avenue north and south. Along the road there is a promenade, lawns and benches.
The Costanera runs beneath the central escarpment and shows the city from a different angle: from there you can see the Palacio de López, the Cabildo, the National Congress and the Catedral above, and on the other side, the bay and the green area of the Reserva Ecológica Banco San Miguel, a protected peninsula.
On Sundays and holidays, the lane of the avenue facing the bay is often closed to cars and becomes a space for walking, running and cycling. In the late afternoon, when the heat drops, the promenade fills with people drinking tereré.
It’s a good place to photograph the Palacio de López, by day or at night when it is lit up.
