About Centro Cultural de la República El Cabildo
The Cabildo de Assunção is the arched building on the bayfront, a block from the Palacio de López, next to the Congreso Nacional. The current building was built during the government of Carlos Antonio López, with a project linked to the Spanish architect Pascual Urdapilleta, and opened in 1857 on one side of the city's former main square.
Over time the building housed the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches. It was the presidential residence until 1894, when the government moved to the Palacio de López. In 2004 it became the Centro Cultural de la República, linked to the Congreso Nacional.
In the rooms, permanent and temporary exhibitions deal with the country's history, indigenous and popular art, Paraguayan music and figures of national life. The building, with arched galleries on both floors, is also worth visiting for its architecture and the view of the bay from the balcony.
The entrance is on Avenida República, in front of the Plaza de la Independencia. The visit pairs well with the Catedral across the square and the Palacio de López.
