About Catedral Metropolitana de Asunción

The Catedral Metropolitana de Asunción, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, patron saint of the city, is located on the Plaza de la Independencia at the top of the historic center. It is the seat of the first diocese in the Río de la Plata region, created in the 16th century.

The first church in Assunção, made of wood and clay, was built in 1539 and destroyed by a fire in 1543. The temple was moved at the end of the 17th century because floods were eroding the riverbank. The current building began construction in 1842 under Carlos Antonio López, with a design by the military architect Pascual Urdapilleta, and was blessed in 1845 while still unfinished.

The neoclassical façade faces the square. Inside, the highlight is the silver-covered high altar. The cathedral welcomed Pope John Paul II in 1988 and Pope Francis in 2015.

Around the square are the Cabildo, the Congreso Nacional and the former seminary. The visit is brief and pairs well with the rest of the downtown on foot.
