About Grotten Sint Pieter

Beneath the Sint-Pietersberg hill, south of Maastricht, there are kilometres of hand-excavated galleries dating back to the Middle Ages. The blokbrekers, stone cutters, removed blocks of marl, the soft limestone used in regional buildings, leaving a maze of corridors behind. Tours run in two separate systems: the Grotten Noord and the Zonneberg.

The Grotten Noord lie next to Fort Sint Pieter and feature galleries of varying heights, with charcoal drawings, inscriptions and paintings made over centuries. During World War II, a vault built there stored about 780 works of art from Dutch museums, including The Night Watch by Rembrandt. It was also in these galleries that, in 1770, the head of a mosasaur, a prehistoric marine reptile, was found.

The Zonneberg is a broader, more regular system. During the war it served as a shelter for the local population. Tours start from Buitengoed Slavante; there is an option with a small museum and a full‑size replica of The Night Watch.

All visits are guided and last about an hour. The temperature inside stays low year‑round.
