About Boekhandel Dominicanen

The Boekhandel Dominicanen operates inside the Dominicanenkerk, a Gothic church built in the 13th century for the Dominican friars, a few steps from the Vrijthof. The convent was dissolved at the end of the 18th century and the church ceased to have a religious function.

After that, the building had various uses over two centuries, from bicycle storage to a venue for Carnival parties. Since 2006 it has housed the bookshop. The shelving structure, with several levels, was installed inside the nave, leaving the vaults and columns visible.

On the ceiling and walls there are still old paintings, including a 14th-century fresco with scenes from the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The former choir houses a café. The bookshop also hosts lectures, debates and musical performances.
