About Jordaan

The Jordaan was laid out in the early 17th century, at the same time as the canal belt, to house workers, artisans and immigrants. The streets are narrow and follow the lines of the old drainage ditches, and many bear the names of flowers and plants, such as Bloemgracht and Egelantiersgracht.

Today it is a residential neighborhood full of local cafés, galleries and small shops. Hidden behind doors, the hofjes are inner courtyards with houses around them, created as housing for the elderly and widows. Some can be visited discreetly, respecting the residents.

In the north of the neighborhood is the Noordermarkt, a square around the Noorderkerk, a 1623 church. On Monday mornings there is a market for fabrics, second-hand goods and antiques; on Saturdays there is a farmers' market (boerenmarkt) that has taken place there since 1987, alongside second-hand stalls.

The Jordaan ends at the Prinsengracht, where the Anne Frank Huis and the Westerkerk are located. The Brouwersgracht, to the north, connects the neighborhood to the canal belt.
