Demerara-Mahaica Georgetown Georgetown is the capital of Guyana, at the mouth of the Demerara River, protected from the Atlantic by the Sea Wall. It has avenues with medians that were once canals, colonial wooden houses on stilts, the Catedral de São Jorge, Stabroek Market with its clock tower and the Jardim Botânico with manatees. English and Guyanese Creole are spoken, and the cuisine mixes Indian, African, Chinese and indigenous influences.
