About Maison Louis XIV
Maison Louis XIV, also called Lohobiague-Enea, is located on praça Louis XIV, between the center and the port. It was built in 1643 by Joannis de Lohobiague, a wealthy shipowner of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, at a time when the port prospered from fishing and navigation. In 1660 the house hosted the young Luís XIV, then 22, for about 40 days while preparations were made for his marriage to the Spanish infanta.
The house remains with the family that built it and is still lived in today, which makes it a rare case: the visit shows furniture, paintings, tableware and objects accumulated over more than three centuries, in a real home rather than a staged museum. The façade, with turrets at the corners, is protected as a historic monument.
A few steps away, on the port quay, is the Maison de l'Infante, of brick and stone, where the infanta Maria Teresa stayed. praça Louis XIV, with plane trees, a bandstand and the town hall, is the center of the town's life.
