About Centro de Interpretación San Cristóbal
The Centro de Interpretación of San Cristóbal is on the northern edge of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, facing the sea. It was built by the Galápagos National Park to explain the archipelago to visitors, and the rooms follow three themes: natural history, covering the formation of the volcanic islands, ocean currents and the arrival of species; human history, with pirates, whalers, settlers and Darwin's visit; and conservation.
The panels, models and objects show, for example, how plants and animals arrived floating or flying and how they differentiated from island to island. They also tell the story of San Cristóbal, the first island to have permanent settlement, including the old sugar plantation of El Progreso.
Trails marked through the dry vegetation, with cacti and birds, leave from the center and lead to Cerro Tijeretas, Playa Baquerizo and viewpoints over the sea.
Visits are usually self-guided.
