About Termas de la Virgen
The Termas de la Virgen are in downtown Baños, at the foot of the slope, next to the La Virgen waterfall, which falls from the top of the cliff. They are public thermal pools of water that spring from the ground heated by the Tungurahua volcano, with a brownish color due to minerals and a temperature around 40 °C. Beside them are cold pools, and the local custom is to alternate between the two.
The hot springs are the reason for the city's name, Baños de Agua Santa, and for the devotion to the Virgin: tradition says the water has healing powers. They open early in the morning and at night, when local families and visitors fill the pools.
Other hot springs in town, like El Salado, about 2 km away, lie in a valley and have pools on several levels. Spa hotels also use the thermal water.
Wearing a swim cap is often required in the public pools.
