About Pailón del Diablo

The Pailón del Diablo is about 18 km from Baños, in the village of Río Verde, on the road to Puyo. It is the most visited waterfall in the region: the Río Verde plunges about 80 meters into a narrow canyon of dark, moss-covered rock, with a loud roar and a spray cloud. The name, "devil's cauldron," comes from the shape of the pool and the force of the water.

From the road, a trail descends through the forest, with stairs and walkways, to the viewpoints. There are two entrances, each with its own route: one leads to a suspension bridge in front of the fall; the other leads to stone walkways clinging to the cliff, where you pass behind and beneath a section of the waterfall called the Paso del Cura, getting wet from the spray.

The trail is about 30 minutes down and the return is uphill. Along the way there are snack stands and craft shops.

A rain poncho and footwear with good grip help: the stairs and walkways are often wet.
