About Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino

The Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino is an old sugarcane estate and producer of rum and honey, founded in the 17th century, about 5 km from downtown Santa Marta. Simón Bolívar, already ill, arrived there in December 1830, hosted by the owner, the Spaniard Joaquín de Mier, and died in the house on 17 December of that year.

The main house, single-storey, with verandas and a courtyard, was restored with period furniture and objects, and the room where Bolívar died remains set up. Around it are the buildings of the former mill, with the trapiche and the stills. On the grounds are the Altar de la Patria, a marble monument honoring Bolívar, and the Museo Bolivariano de Arte Contemporáneo, with works by artists from the countries he helped liberate.

The gardens occupy much of the estate, with century-old trees such as samanes and tamarinds, native plants and a botanical garden. Iguanas and birds roam among the trees. The visit is peaceful and full of shade.

The estate preserves the memory of Bolívar's final days and of the independence of the countries he freed.
