About Catedral Basílica de Santa Marta
The Catedral Basílica de Santa Marta is in the historic center, a few blocks from the sea. The current church, with white walls, a tower and a dome, was built in the 18th century on the site of earlier temples, and is one of the oldest cathedrals in Colombia. The interior is simple and bright, with wooden altars and arches.
Inside is the tomb of Rodrigo de Bastidas, the Spanish conquistador who founded Santa Marta in 1525. The body of Simón Bolívar also remained there in 1830, when he died at the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, until 1842, when the remains were taken to Caracas, Venezuela.
Around the cathedral, the historic center has streets of colonial and republican houses, some restored as hotels and restaurants. Parque de Bolívar, two blocks away, has the Casa de la Aduana, with the Museo del Oro Tairona, and Parque de los Novios, further on, is the meeting point with bars and restaurants at night. The malecón of the Bahía, by the sea, completes the walk.
The cathedral remains active, with masses.
