About Chipre e o Monumento a los Colonizadores
Chipre is the neighborhood at the western end of Manizales, where the mountain ridge the city was built on ends in a promontory over the valleys. It is known for its evenings: from the viewpoints the sun sets over the Central and Western Cordillera mountains, with the valleys of the Cauca and Chinchiná rivers below.
At the top of the neighborhood stands the Monumento a los Colonizadores, a bronze work by sculptor Luis Guillermo Vallejo, inaugurated in 2002. It depicts families of Antioquian settlers climbing the mountain with mules, tools and children, in a large-scale composition made from metal of keys and objects donated by residents. Around it there is a viewpoint and the Museo de los Colonizadores nearby.
Avenida 12 de Octubre, which cuts through the neighborhood, brings together cafés, restaurants and stalls selling obleas, wafers filled with arequipe, and other treats. The Torre de Chipre, an observation tower with an elevator, completes the views.
The neighborhood is a few minutes by taxi from the center and is the typical late-afternoon activity in Manizales.
