About Mirador Killi Killi

Mirador Killi Killi sits atop the Villa Pabón neighborhood, east of downtown La Paz, on a hill overlooking the canyon. From the circular terrace, with benches and low walls, you can see the whole city: the center with Plaza Murillo and the towers of the Catedral, the slopes of houses rising up to El Alto, the Hernando Siles stadium and, to the south, the snow-capped Illimani, over 6,400 meters high.

The place has history. In 1781, during the siege of La Paz led by Túpac Katari, the hill was used by the besiegers to watch over the city. Later it became known as a viewpoint and underwent renovations, resulting in the current terrace. Monuments commemorate the heroes of the 1809 uprising.

The mirador is popular with locals at late afternoon, when the sun lights the slopes and the Illimani turns pink, and at night, when the city lights come on as far as El Alto. On clear days the view reaches the Cordillera Real.

Access is via steep streets; by taxi, the climb takes only a few minutes.

Best time

Late afternoon, to see the Illimani turn pink and the city lights coming on, or early in the morning when the sky is usually clearer. In the dry season, from May to October, the view is more open.

How to get there

It is about 1.5 km from Plaza Murillo, atop Villa Pabón. By taxi it's 5 to 10 minutes; on foot the climb is steep and long given the altitude.

Tip

Go by taxi and arrange your return, or walk down to the center, which is easier. Bring a jacket: it gets windy and cools down quickly after sunset.
