About Cerro Calvario

Cerro Calvario sits north of the village of Copacabana, on the bay shore, rising about 150 meters above the lake. A stone path and stairways lead to the top, passing the 14 stations of the way of the cross, with crosses and small altars where pilgrims pray and light candles.

At the summit there is a chapel and a terrace with stalls selling candles, flowers and miniatures like those at the Alasitas fairs, which the faithful buy to ask for prosperity. The tradition mixes Catholic faith with Aymara rituals: it is common to see offerings being burned, with smoke and incense.

From the top you can see the whole village, with the basilica and its white domes, the bay with boats, the Copacabana peninsula and the lake, as far as the Isla del Sol and the Isla de la Luna. On clear days the Cordillera Real appears on the horizon. In the late afternoon the sunset over the lake often draws locals and visitors.

The ascent takes 30 to 45 minutes and is steep, at about 3,900 meters. Go slowly, take breaks, and bring warm clothing for the descent, which can be done after sunset.
