Lisboa
Capital of Portugal, Lisboa rises over hills by the Tejo. The Baixa, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, links the Rossio to Praça do Comércio. Alfama has the Castelo de São Jorge, the Sé, the Panteão and the Museu do Fado; Chiado and Bairro Alto lie on the other side. In Belém are the Torre, the Jerónimos and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos. The city is rounded out by the Gulbenkian, the Oceanário, the Parque das Nações and the Elétrico 28.

Cascais
A former fishing village on the coast west of Lisboa, which became a seaside resort when the royal family started spending summers at the Cidadela in the late 19th century. It has a bay with boats, a historic centre of cobbled streets, the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, the Farol-Museu de Santa Marta and a seafront promenade to the Estoril. To the west lie the Boca do Inferno and the Praia do Guincho.

Sintra
Village on the northern slope of the Serra de Sintra, about 28 km from Lisbon, a World Heritage Site as a Cultural Landscape. In the center is the Palácio Nacional, with conical chimneys. In the sierra are the Palácio da Pena, the Castelo dos Mouros, the Quinta da Regaleira, Monserrate and the Convento dos Capuchos. To the west the sierra reaches the sea at Cabo da Roca, with beaches such as Adraga and villages like Azenhas do Mar.
