About Mosteiro de Santa Cruz

The Mosteiro de Santa Cruz was founded in 1131 by Augustinian canons, with the support of D. Afonso Henriques. It was one of the most important cultural centers in Portugal during the Middle Ages.

In the church are the tombs of D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, and his son D. Sancho I, sculpted in the 16th century in the manueline style. For this reason the monastery has the status of National Pantheon.

The current façade dates from the 16th century, and the interior features azulejos and gilded woodwork. The claustro do Silêncio, with reliefs, is also part of the visit.

Beside it, in a former chapel of the monastery, is the Café Santa Cruz, opened in 1923, with Gothic vaults and stained glass.
