About Costanera de San Bernardino
The Costanera of San Bernardino is the town’s shoreline on the eastern edge of Lago Ypacaraí, a lake about 24 km from north to south and 5 to 6 km wide, with an average depth of 3 meters. From the promenade you can see the whole lake and, on the far side, the hills of Areguá.
The waterfront has a promenade, lighting, lawns, bike lanes and resting areas, plus a sandy beach. From December to February it is the center of the summer season: families from Asunción spend the day at the waterfront, the lakeside clubs fill up, and there are nautical competitions, music performances and weekend fairs.
The shallow waters of the Ypacaraí have long been used for sailing, kayaking and small boats. The lake lent its name to one of Paraguay’s best-known guarânias, Recuerdos de Ypacaraí, by Demetrio Ortiz and Zulema de Mirkin.
Out of season, the waterfront is quiet and good for walks at dusk, when the sun sets on the other side of the lake.
