About Cascada de Peguche
Cascada de Peguche is about 3 km from Otavalo, near the Peguche community, within a protected eucalyptus and native forest. The waterfall is about 18 meters and falls into a pool surrounded by rocks, with a wooden bridge in front.
For the Kichwa communities in the region it is a sacred place. Before Inti Raymi, the June solstice festival, residents perform the purification bath there at night to welcome the new cycle. Around the site there are paths through the forest, a small recreational area and stalls selling crafts and food.
A trail climbs the side to the top of the fall and continues above it, with valley views. The Peguche community is known for weavers and musicians; some workshops welcome visitors to demonstrate the loom.
The visit is short and easy, on dirt paths.
