About Museo de Antioquia

The Museo de Antioquia was founded in 1881 and is one of Colombia’s oldest museums. Since 2000 it has occupied the old Palacio Municipal de Medellín, an Art Deco building from the 1930s facing Plaza Botero. The collection gathers Colombian art from the pre-Hispanic period to the contemporary, with a focus on Antioquia.

The most visited part is the rooms dedicated to Fernando Botero, with more than one hundred works donated by the artist: paintings of Medellín life scenes, portraits, still lifes and sculptures, plus works by international artists from his collection. There is also a room with the murals by Pedro Nel Gómez, an Antioquian painter and architect who painted the building’s frescoes.

The other rooms display colonial art, 19th- and 20th-century painting, photography and contemporary art, with temporary exhibitions that address Colombian history and society. The building has an interior courtyard and a café.

The museum visit complements the plaza: outside are the bronze sculptures; inside, the paintings.
