About Plaza de Bolívar de Filandia
Filandia is a small town in northern Quindío, founded in 1878, at about 1,900 meters altitude, on a ridge between the valleys of the Barbas and Quindío rivers. The center is one of the best-preserved ensembles of Antioquian colonization architecture in the region, with two-story bahareque houses, wooden balconies, wide eaves, and doors and windows painted red, green, blue and yellow.
La Plaza de Bolívar is the heart of the town, with trees, benches, and the Iglesia de María Inmaculada, with a white façade, on one side. Around it, the manor houses host cafés, restaurants, ice-cream shops and craft stores. The Calle del Tiempo Detenido, near the square, brings together some of the oldest and most colorful facades.
Filandia is known for basketry made from cipó (bejuco), woven into baskets and objects used in coffee harvesting, which are still sold in shops and workshops. The town receives fewer visitors than Salento and maintains a calmer pace, with locals in the square and Willys jeeps loaded with farm products.
The center can be explored on foot in a short time.
