About Catedral de Sal de Zipaquirá
The Catedral de Sal lies inside the rock salt mountain that the Muiscas were already exploiting before the arrival of the Spanish and that is still mined in Zipaquirá today. Miners set up a sanctuary in the tunnels in the 1930s, and a first cathedral was opened in 1954. Due to structural problems it was closed, and the current cathedral, excavated at a lower level, was inaugurated on December 16, 1995.
The visit begins with a tunnel that slopes downward and passes the 14 stations of the Stations of the Cross, small chapels carved into the rock, each with a cross and a space to kneel. The path reaches the dome, the choir and the three naves, which represent the birth, life and death of Jesus. In the central nave, a cross carved in low relief on the salt wall is illuminated in the background, about 180 meters below the surface.
Colored lighting changes the tone of the walls along the route. There are masses on Sundays. In the same complex, the Parque de la Sal has shops, a space for light‑and‑sound shows, a mining museum and extra activities, such as the mine‑helmet tour.
Inside the mine the temperature is stable, about 14 °C. The floor is damp and uneven in some stretches and there are long ramps; closed shoes are helpful.

Is the Catedral de Sal a real church?
Yes. It is a Catholic temple where Masses are celebrated, mainly on Sundays, and at the same time one of Colombia's most visited sites.
Does the mine still operate?
Yes. Salt extraction continues in other parts of the mountain; the cathedral is located in an area set aside for visitors.
Is the visit cramped or claustrophobic?
The tunnels are wide and tall, and the naves are spacious. Even so, it is an underground route with little natural light; anyone who feels uncomfortable in enclosed spaces should take this into account.
