Valparaíso
Valparaíso is Chile's main port and the capital of the region that bears its name. The city rises from the sea up dozens of cerros, with colorful houses, stairways and old funiculars. The cerros Alegre and Concepción, with Palacio Baburizza, are the gateway. On Cerro Bellavista are La Sebastiana, Neruda's house, and Museo a Cielo Abierto. Down below, Plaza Sotomayor, Muelle Prat and Paseo 21 de Mayo showcase the bay and the naval history.

Casablanca
Casablanca is the town in the white-wine valley between Santiago and Valparaíso, about 80 km from the capital along Ruta 68. Founded in 1753 as Santa Bárbara de la Reina, it has the Plaza de Armas and the Parroquia Santa Bárbara in the center. The wineries sit beside the highway, before the town: Indómita, on top of a hill, and Emiliana, run with organic and biodynamic farming. Matetic is in the neighboring Valle del Rosario. The morning fog coming from the Pacific favors sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir.

Hanga Roa
Hanga Roa is the village of Ilha de Páscoa on the west coast, where almost the entire population lives. The name, in Rapa Nui, means long bay. It has the fishing boat cove, Avenida Policarpo Toro and the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz. To the north are the Tahai complex and the Museo Antropológico Padre Sebastián Englert. From there depart excursions to Tongariki, Rano Raraku, Anakena, Te Pito Kura, Ahu Akivi, Puna Pau, Vinapu, Rano Kau and Orongo.

Viña del Mar
Viña del Mar, founded in 1874, is the seaside resort next to Valparaíso, known as Ciudad Jardín. The waterfront includes the Reloj de Flores, the Castillo Wulff on the rocks and beaches such as Acapulco and, farther north, Reñaca. In the center, the Quinta Vergara houses the festival amphitheater and the Museo de Bellas Artes Palacio Vergara; the Museo Fonck has a moai at the entrance. The coastal road continues to the dunes of Concón.
