University city on top of a hill above the Mondego, the first capital of Portugal. At the top, the University, a World Heritage Site, has the Paço das Escolas and the Biblioteca Joanina, next to the Sé Velha and the Jardim Botânico. In the Baixa is the Mosteiro de Santa Cruz. On the other bank, Santa Clara-a-Velha, Portugal dos Pequenitos and the Quinta das Lágrimas. 16 km away, Conímbriga.
