About Misión Jesuítica de Jesús de Tavarangüé

The mission of Jesús de Tavarangüé was founded in 1685 and moved several times before settling on a hill about 12 km from Trinidad, 40 km from Encarnación. With Santísima Trinidad del Paraná, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.

The highlight is the church, planned to be one of the largest of the missions. Construction was underway when the Jesuits were expelled from the Spanish domains in 1767, and it was never finished. What remains are the high stone walls, the column bases and the portals.

The portals have three-lobed arches, of Moorish inspiration, rare in the missions, attributed to the Spanish architect Antonio Forcada. On the stones you can see rosettes and other details carved by Guaraní craftsmen. Around the church are the remains of the tower and the houses.

Jesús is usually quieter than Trinidad. From the top of the hill, the countryside opens in all directions, and the visit pairs well with Trinidad on the same day.
