Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before booking. Orvieto is on the conventional rail line between Rome and Florence: from Rome about 1–1.5 hours; from Florence about 2 hours, on regional and Intercity trains. The station is down below, in Orvieto Scalo; the funicular or a replacement bus goes up to the center. Confirm which is operating.
How many days
A full day is enough for the Duomo, the Pozzo di San Patrizio, the underground sites and the Torre del Moro, and Orvieto works well as a day trip from Rome or Florence. Staying overnight in town lets you see the Duomo's façade at night and walk around without the daytime tour groups.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable times to walk around the rock. At Corpus Christi, in May or June depending on the year, the town holds a historical procession. At the end of the year the Umbria Jazz Winter usually takes place. In summer the heat is strong during the central hours of the day.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
No. The train takes care of arrival, and the historic center is a ZTL, closed to outside cars. Those arriving by car leave their vehicle in the lower parking areas, such as the Campo della Fiera, which is connected to the center by escalators and an elevator.
