The city

What to expect from Brindisi.

Brindisi is the port city in the south of Puglia, in a bay of the Adriatic used as a port since Roman times. At the top of the harbour staircase stands the Roman column that marks the end of the Via Ápia, and tradition says Virgilio died nearby. The historic centre includes the cathedral square, with the archaeological museum, and the round church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro. The waterfront faces the Monumento ao Marinheiro, and near the airport is Santa Maria del Casale, with 14th-century frescoes. Ferries to Grécia depart from the port. Italian is spoken.
