Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Check before buying. Brindisi's airport, Aeroporto del Salento, is about 6 km from the centre, with flights from Rome, Milan and other European cities, and buses to the station. By train it is about 1 hour from Bari and about 30 minutes from Lecce; from Rome it is 5 to 6 hours. By car, take the SS16 and the SS379, which follow the coast from Bari. Ferries from Grécia arrive at the port, near the centre.

How many days

One day is enough for the historic centre, the Roman column, the cathedral with its museum and the waterfront. With an extra afternoon, visit the church of Santa Maria del Casale. Brindisi also serves as a base for Lecce, Ostuni and the Salento coast, or as a stopover before taking the ferry to Grécia.

When to go

From May to June and in September the weather is warm and dry, good for walking and for the nearby beaches. July and August are very hot and are when there are more ferries to Grécia. Winter is mild, with more rain.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

A car is not necessary for the city: the historic centre and the waterfront are walked on foot, and trains link Brindisi with Lecce and Bari. A car is useful for Santa Maria del Casale, near the airport, and to get around the beaches and towns of the Salento and the Itria Valley.
