About Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie
The Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie is one of the three museums run by the Bayeux town council. It tells the story of the Battle of Normandia, the roughly one hundred days of fighting that followed the landing of June 6, 1944 until the liberation of the region at the end of August.
The exhibition follows the sequence of events, with maps, photos, uniforms, weapons and vehicles of the Allied and German armies. It also shows how the civilian population experienced the bombings and the occupation.
A film made from archival footage summarizes the battle and helps to understand what is later seen on the beaches and in the cemeteries along the coast.
Opposite is the Bayeux War Cemetery, the largest British military cemetery of the Second World War in France, and the memorial with the names of Commonwealth soldiers missing in Normandia.
