About Musée du Débarquement
The Musée du Débarquement is located in Arromanches-les-Bains, on Gold Beach, and was the first museum established about the landings, shortly after the war. It tells the story of the Mulberry harbor, the centerpiece of Allied logistics.
To supply the troops without immediately capturing a deep-water port, the Allies manufactured large concrete blocks, floating piers and bridges in England, which were towed across the English Channel and assembled on the Normandy coast. Two harbors were constructed; the one at Omaha Beach was destroyed by a storm on 19 June 1944, while the Arromanches harbor operated for months.
Even today you can see the concrete blocks of the former harbor in the sea off the town. The museum explains how it worked with models, films and objects, and has a direct view of the remains.
On the clifftop east of the town, the circular cinema Arromanches 360 shows a film about the Battle of Normandy, and the adjacent viewpoint is the best spot to see the harbor layout in the sea.
