About Jardín Botánico de Medellín
The Jardín Botánico de Medellín Joaquín Antonio Uribe is in the north of the city, in the Carlos E. Restrepo neighborhood, occupying about 14 hectares of green space. The name honors the Antioquian naturalist Joaquín Antonio Uribe. The garden has collections of palms, cacti and succulents, aquatic plants, bromeliads, heliconias and a tropical forest, with flat, shaded paths.
The best-known structure is the Orquideorama, a wooden and steel structure shaped like hexagonal flowers, from 2006, which houses the orchid collection and serves as a space for exhibitions and fairs. This is where the orchid exhibition of the Feria de las Flores is set up in August.
In the middle of the garden, the lake has turtles, ducks and many iguanas that sunbathe on the grass. Squirrels and birds also appear. The butterfly house displays regional species.
Next door are Parque Explora, an interactive science center with an aquarium, and the Planetário de Medellín, and the Universidad station of the metro. The garden is a peaceful option for a morning.
