Pucón – Araucanía Destination Lakes and Volcanoes
How to get there
-
Aeropuerto Internacional La Araucanía (ZCO) Temuco · 90 km
-
Terminal de Buses JAC Pucón 1 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
The airport used is Temuco, about 90 km away, with transfers and rental cars. Overnight buses link Santiago to Pucón, and there are frequent services from Temuco and Villarrica. From Puerto Varas it's about 300 km via Ruta 5.
How many days
Three days allow for the volcano ascent, if conditions permit, one day in Huerquehue and an afternoon at the Ojos del Caburgua and the beach. With four or five days there's leeway to postpone the climb.
When to go
Summer, from December to March, is the beach and volcano-climbing season, with the town crowded. In autumn the forests change color and there are fewer people. In winter it rains a lot and the volcano's slope is often covered in snow.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
The town center and the beach are walkable, and agencies take visitors to the volcano. There are buses to Huerquehue and Caburgua, but a car gives more freedom to combine parks, waterfalls and lakes.
