About Museo Marítimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia

The Maritime and Prison Museum of Ushuaia occupies the building of the former prison at the eastern end of the town center. The corridors and cells help explain how the prison contributed to the city's formation. The complex retains the layout of its pavilions, each used for different museum purposes.

The exhibitions deal with the maritime history of the region, Antarctic voyages and life inside the penal institution. Ship models and documents bring visitors closer to the southern routes, while the prison spaces allow observation of the building's architecture and the everyday life narrated by the collection.

A visit is an alternative for a rainy day or to break up mountain walks. Don’t pass through the pavilions merely as a thoroughfare: allow time for the objects and explanations in each section. Entry conditions and guided visits should be confirmed before you go, rather than relying on a fixed time in your schedule.
