About Äußere Neustadt
Neustadt (New Town) lies on the north bank of the Elbe, opposite the old town. The part closest to the river, the Innere Neustadt, features the golden statue of Augustus the Strong, the Goldener Reiter, and the tree-lined pedestrian street Hauptstraße. Further north, the Äußere Neustadt is a neighborhood of 19th-century buildings that largely escaped the 1945 bombings.
Today the Äußere Neustadt is the city's alternative quarter, with bars, restaurants serving many cuisines, independent shops, second-hand stores and lots of street art. Alaunstraße, Louisenstraße and Görlitzer Straße concentrate the action, which continues late into weekend nights.
The most photographed spot is the Kunsthofpassage, a sequence of inner courtyards decorated by artists. In the Hof der Elemente, the gutter pipes form a blue sculpture that makes a water sound when it rains; other courtyards have walls in yellow, green and with animal motifs.
Nearby, on Bautzner Straße, is the Pfunds Molkerei, the dairy shop decorated with hand-painted tiles.
