About Travemünde
Travemünde lies about 15 kilometres northeast of Lübeck's centre, where the river Trave meets the Baltic Sea. It has been a seaside resort since 1802 and is also the largest ferry port in Germany on the Baltic, with links to Scandinavia and the Baltic countries.
The main beach runs along the promenade (Strandpromenade), about 1.7 kilometres long, built in the early 20th century. On the other side of the river, the Priwall peninsula has another stretch of sand. The bathing season usually runs from June to August, with cold water. On the sand are the wicker beach baskets with canopies (Strandkorb).
On the Vorderreihe, by the river, there are shops, cafés and fish restaurants, and ships pass by on their way to the port. The Alter Leuchtturm, dating from 1539, is the oldest lighthouse to survive on the German coast and has become a maritime signaling museum.
On the Priwall is moored the Passat, a four-masted sailing ship from 1911 that sailed the grain and nitrate route with South America and is now a museum ship. A short ferry links Travemünde's centre to the Priwall.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
Half a day for the promenade and the Vorderreihe; a full day if you include the beach and the Passat.
Best time
June to August is the period for the beach, with no guarantee of warm weather. Out of season the waterfront is good for walks, and it can be windy. The lighthouse and the Passat have their own visiting seasons and opening hours: check before you go.
How to get there
Regional trains run from Lübeck central station to Travemünde and stop at Skandinavienkai, Hafen and Strand stations; the last is a few minutes from the beach. City buses also run the route.
Tip
Get off at Lübeck-Travemünde Strand station to go straight to the promenade. Take a jacket even in summer: the sea wind cools quickly.
