About NS-Dokumentationszentrum der Stadt Köln

The NS-Dokumentationszentrum is Cologne's museum and memorial dedicated to the Nazi era. It is housed in the EL-DE-Haus, a building in the city centre that was the Gestapo's headquarters, the regime's political police, from 1935 to 1945.

In the basement are the cells where prisoners were held. The walls preserve hundreds of inscriptions made by them, in various languages, which are the site's most powerful record. The visit is a moment of remembrance: the setting calls for silence and it is not a place for posed photos.

On the upper floors, the exhibition shows how Nazism took root in everyday life in Cologne, the persecution of Jews, Roma, opponents and other groups, and the deportations from the city. The permanent exhibition is being gradually renewed, but the museum remains open.
