About Riffelsee

Riffelsee is a small lake, under half a hectare, at 2,757 m, on a slope between the Gornergrat and Riffelberg. It lies below the Rotenboden stop, at 2,815 m, on the Gornergrat Bahn line.

The lake faces the Matterhorn. When there is no wind and the sky is clear, the surface can mirror the mountain, one of the region's classic images. A breeze is enough to make the reflection disappear.

From Rotenboden a short trail descends to the shore. Many people continue on foot to Riffelberg, at 2,583 m, and take the train back there.

In European winter the lake freezes and is covered by snow, and the area is used by skiers and by those sledding from Rotenboden to Riffelberg.
