About Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse links Zermatt station to Kirchplatz, running north–south through the town center. Pedestrians, taxis and hotel electric carts use it, and along it are shops selling mountain gear, watchmakers, chocolatiers, restaurants and old hotels.

Bronze plaques on the pavement and facades form the Walk of Climb, created on the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the Matterhorn. They honor the seven men who reached the summit on 14 July 1865 and the two who climbed from the Italian side three days later. Two plaques commemorate Lucy Walker, the first woman on the summit in 1871, and Meta Brevoort, who crossed the mountain from Zermatt to Breuil that same year.

The first plaque, near the Catholic church, honors Peter Taugwalder father, Zermatt guide in the 1865 party. At the southern end of the street is Hotel Monte Rosa, tied to the village's mountaineering history.

Near the station, Bahnhofplatz brings together the electric taxi stand, the tourist office and the departure of the Gornergrat Bahn.
