About Rätisches Museum
The Museu Rético tells the story of the canton of Grisões, from prehistory to the present. It is housed in a Baroque house built in 1675 by the Buol family, in the old town on the slope below the cathedral. The museum was founded in 1872 to prevent cultural objects from the region being sold and taken away, and it now holds around 100,000 items.
The name comes from Rhaetia (Récia), the Roman province that occupied the region. The rooms display finds from prehistory and the Roman era, medieval religious objects, weapons and items from the League of the Three Leagues, the alliance that governed Grisões for centuries, and displays of village mountain life, with furniture, clothing, tools and toys.
Part of the museum is dedicated to the canton’s three languages—German, Romansh and Italian—and to how isolated valleys developed different customs. The house’s own interiors, with wood paneling and ceramic stoves, are part of the visit.
It is a good starting point to understand the region before heading into the valleys and the Engadina.
