About Bündner Kunstmuseum
The Museu de Arte dos Grisões is close to Chur station, in two adjacent buildings. The first is the Villa Planta, a 19th-century neoclassical house with elements of Oriental inspiration, built by a Grisões merchant who made his fortune in Egypt. The museum was installed there in 1919. The second is a new building, opened in 2016, with a façade of geometric reliefs that houses the temporary exhibitions.
The collection is dedicated to art connected to the Grisões and the Alps. It includes works by the three Giacometti born in the canton: Giovanni, the post-Impressionist painter; his cousin Augusto, creator of the stained glass of São Martinho; and Alberto, the sculptor of elongated figures. There are also paintings by Giovanni Segantini, who painted the Engadina mountains, by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who lived in Davos, and by Angelika Kauffmann, an 18th-century painter born in Chur.
Alpine landscapes, mountain light and valley life are themes that run through the collection, making the museum a good stop for those traveling by train through the Engadina.
The temporary exhibitions, in the new building, present Swiss and international contemporary art.
