About Stanserhorn
The Stanserhorn towers above Stans in the canton of Nidwalden, a few minutes by train from Lucerne. The summit, at 1,898 m, offers views over Lake Lucerne, the Swiss plateau and the Alps.
The ascent starts with a funicular from 1893, featuring wooden cars open on the sides, which takes you to Kälti. From there the CabriO continues, a cable car opened in 2012 with a two-storey cabin. On the upper deck, which has no roof, passengers ride in the open air.
At the top there is a short circular trail with information panels about flowers and mountains, where marmots often appear in the European summer. The Rondorama restaurant turns slowly and displays the whole landscape during the meal.
The season usually runs from April to November. Check operations before you go up.

How much time to set aside
Three to four hours, including travel time from Lucerne.
Best time
From June to September, with a higher chance of seeing marmots and flowers. On very windy days the open-top deck of the CabriO may be closed.
How to get there
Train from Lucerne to Stans in about 15–20 minutes. From Stans station walk about 5 minutes to the funicular.
Tip
In the CabriO queue, ask for the upper deck: space is limited and it’s worth it. Bring a jacket, as the wind on the top deck is cold.
