About KKL Luzern
The KKL, Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern, sits next to the station on the lakefront. The project is by French architect Jean Nouvel, who won the competition in 1989. The concert hall opened in 1998 and the whole building in 2000.
The flat roof, 113 m by 107 m, extends about 45 m over the plaza and the water. Underneath it is clad in aluminum panels that reflect the lake. Two water channels run into the building and divide it into three parts.
The concert hall was designed with American acoustician Russell Johnson and is home to the Lucerne Festival, which brings orchestras from several countries together during the European summer. On the fourth floor is the Kunstmuseum Luzern, with Central Swiss art from the Renaissance to the present and temporary exhibitions.
The terrace beneath the roof is open and offers views of the lake, the Altstadt and the Pilatus.
