About Hofkirche St. Leodegar
The Hofkirche stands on the site of the Benedictine monastery of São Leodegário, founded in the 8th century, around which Lucerna grew. It is on a rise east of the Altstadt, facing the lake.
A fire in 1633 destroyed the medieval church; only the two towers, 69 m high with a 12th‑century base, survived. The new church was built between 1633 and 1639 and is a rare example of late Renaissance architecture north of the Alps, constructed in the midst of the Thirty Years' War.
Inside the Grande Hoforgel above the entrance is notable; its origins date to 1640–1648. The organ has a rain-like sound effect and is used in concerts.
The church is surrounded by arcaded galleries, the Gräberhallen, where influential Lucerna families are buried, with tombstones and coats of arms.
