About Titlis

The Titlis, at 3,238 m, lies south of Engelberg, on the border with the canton of Bern. The upper station, on Klein Titlis, is at 3,020 m, next to the glacier, which usually retains snow year-round.

The ascent starts from Engelberg, at about 1,000 m. The Titlis Xpress gondola passes Trübsee and reaches Stand, at 2,428 m. From there, the Titlis Rotair makes the final section in a cabin that rotates 360 degrees during the roughly 5-minute trip.

At the top, the Glacier Cave is a corridor of about 150 m carved some 10 m below the glacier surface. The Cliff Walk is a suspension bridge of around 100 m at 3,041 m, above a cliff with about a 500 m drop, leading to the Ice Flyer station. That chairlift crosses the glacier; in the European summer, for a few weeks, it leads to a playground area in the snow. The Titlis Tower has a viewing terrace and a restaurant.

The air is thin at 3,000 m: ascend slowly and drink water. Check operation times before going up.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

Half a day to a full day, including the ascent from Engelberg.

Best time

Go up at the first slot: clouds often close in on the summit as the day progresses. Clear days in winter and early European summer tend to offer good visibility. Check the summit webcams before buying.

How to get there

The lower station of the Titlis Xpress gondola is about a 10-minute walk from Engelberg train station. From Lucerne to Engelberg it's about 45 minutes by train.

Tip

Bring a jacket, hat, gloves and sunglasses even in European summer: at the top temperatures are often below zero and the snow reflects the sun. Wear shoes with firm soles on the Cliff Walk and on the glacier.
