About Alimentarium
The Alimentarium opened in 1985 on the Vevey waterfront, in the 1921 neoclassical building that was Nestlé’s first administrative center. The museum belongs to a foundation supported by the company and underwent a full renovation in 2016.
The permanent exhibition addresses food from several angles: what we eat, how food is produced, and what it means to eat well. There are video installations, photo reports, works of art and about 500 objects from the collection, plus a play area for children.
At the entrance, a garden with more than 300 edible plants changes with the seasons. The museum kitchen hosts workshops and demonstrations, in French.
In front of the building, an 8-meter stainless-steel fork rises out of the lake. It was placed in 1995 for the museum’s tenth anniversary as part of a temporary exhibition and was removed the following year. More than ten years later it returned to the lake after a petition and has remained on the waterfront.
