Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before booking. Keswick has no train station: from Windermere the 555 bus takes about 1 hour, and from Penrith, which has a station on the London Euston–Glasgow line, the X4/X5 buses take around 45 minutes. By car, take the A66.
How many days
Two days: one for Derwentwater, by boat and on foot, including Friar's Crag and Catbells, and another for Castlerigg, Borrowdale and Aira Force. For longer hikes such as Skiddaw or Helvellyn add an extra day.
When to go
From May to September, with more boat services and drier trails; July and August are the busiest. October brings autumn colours. In winter the days are short and the fells can be snowy.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
You don’t need a car for the town, the lake and Castlerigg; buses and the boat cover Borrowdale and Catbells. A car helps for Ullswater and more remote valleys. You drive on the left, and mountain passes like Honister are steep and narrow.
